in between
This August the pose of the month at OM yoga is Dhanurasana and the “in-between.” When I wrote that I was thinking about August as a sort of in between time since it is hard core summer vacation time and yet it evolves into a melancholy end of summer and back to school vibe.
But then….I taught my yoga class at OM yoga last night after 3 weeks gone. What fun! There were so many people there and many that I hadn’t seen in a while. There was such a warm, good feeling of homecoming. Mark Donato was front and center; Mark Owen who told me “everything has been resolved”; Chama from TokyoYoga doing great despite jet lag; quiet and powerful Sasha, Sarah and Jeff; cheerful Cherie who is quickly evolving from an amazing hairdresser to an amazing yogini! I couldn’t find Elizabeth at first because she wasn’t in her usual spot but then there she was on the other side of the room and reminded me that I told her last time that she had to change places. Good idea, right? Do you tend to put your mat in the same spot every time? Why not shift your vantage point?
So we had a good time together and worked on dropping back into full kapotasana and variations thereof. People worked in partners and on their own and as I walked around I realized….the in-between of asana is a key aspect. That is when the awareness often just craps out. Coming into the pose, especially a big backbend, our minds are focusing on where we are going. Coming out of the pose, especially after that one minute forearm balance and much longer headstand that we did, people are tired and ready to be in child’s pose. But those interstitial gaps, those liminal moments are the where the juice is. That is when transformation is occurring and if we can stay with it and keep our awareness we will learn a lot. That is how we see our options and can make creative choices. What other in-betweens are in your life? In-between jobs, lovers, or maybe just on the walk to work?
