GREATNESS & IMPERMANENCE

The great Merce Cunningham died last night.  He was one of the most influential artists of all time.  His medium was Dance, or should I say Bodies or should I say People or should I say Chance or should I say Music-Non-Music or should I say Theater or should I say Space.  Even though I haven’t danced since 1994, I feel the loss. My dharma sister, Christine Wright, who is a well-known NY dancer and dance teacher, and I talked today at the retreat about how a person like him comes along only once in several generations, or maybe only once at all.

Here is a quote from Merce that was in The NY Times today.  It reminds me of yoga.

“You have to love dancing to stick to it,” he once wrote. “It gives you nothing back, no manuscripts to store away, no paintings to show on walls and maybe hang in museums, no poems to be printed and sold, nothing but that single fleeting moment when you feel alive.”
